Rescue Dog Myth Busters

Rescue dog myth busters!
Between rescue and training, I’ve heard all of these many times over. It always amazes me what awesome dogs can end up in the rescue system, but if you’re adopting a dog it always pays to keep your emotions in check & look a little deeper than surface level marketing. Bringing a dog into your home is ideally a long term commitment, and taking your time to do that based on facts is really important.
Along with these, ask a few questions about the situation.
Is this shelter screening dogs appropriately for behaviour and physical health? Are they being transparent about this?
Do they actually know the background of this dog, or is it a guessed/made up story designed to sell?
Is this dog actually suitable for my family home, or do they need a specific kind of home to meet their needs?
Have I got the resources and support I need to work through any challenges my dog might have (keeping in mind genetic limitations)?
Adopting a dog is a wonderful thing with the right match, but that only works when we go in with our eyes open. For your best chance at long term success, take your time and look for more than a good story or cute photo.
