Prevention is better than a cure!
Does your dog bark at the fence line all day, chew things they shouldn’t, harass the older dog, get into the cat food or jump on visitors trying to get in the door?
Training can help with much of this, but often what is missing from the picture is a solid management strategy! By containing our dogs appropriately we can prevent them from practicing things we don’t want, and ensure we are directing them into behaviours we DO want. This means they are safer, can enjoy greater freedom later, and less problematic behaviours requiring training help to undo. Check out these slides below for some options I personally use.
Please note: management is NOT a replacement for a fulfilling life with a suitable balance of exercise, training and work. But it is an important part of being a responsible pet dog owner, keeping our dogs safe and out of trouble. It also makes life with a dog a hell of a lot less stressful.
