The Puppy Blues

One of the biggest shocks for new puppy owners is just how challenging it can be, and the feelings that come along with it. That’s one of the biggest reasons pups are rehomed in the early months.

I have been blessed with the most amazing puppy who is on track for a great future. I’ve also raised a lot of puppies and new dogs over the years and know most of the tricks which makes things easier. But even as a professional trainer, it’s always a bit of a shock to the system just how much puppies impact our lives.

The disrupted sleep, changes to your schedule to accommodate puppy needs, an extra dose of energy and tantrums in the home to manage - it’s a lot. It does wear on you, and even really experienced people can find it mentally and emotionally draining. I have more than one friend who have fallen into a form of depression while raising their pups, and that’s not something we talk about enough.

If you’re having a hard time with your pup, give yourself some grace. There’s a reason we have the term “puppy blues” - as cute as they are, as amazing as the journey is watching them grow and develop and as much as we love them, raising puppies is hard and it’s not uncommon to have some mixed feelings. But have faith that they do grow up & your hard work will pay off. Don’t be afraid to seek support if you need it, whether that’s a friend to look after puppy for the day or a night, an ear to talk it out with or training support to help you on your journey. The struggle is very real and you don’t have to tackle it alone.

Ps Halo is now 6mo, and check out that glow up!
