Prioritising training our dogs
It takes time and effort to build a well trained dog & strong relationship. With the right advice and support that can be a smoother, faster process but we still need to put the work in if we want to see results.
We’re all busy, we’re all juggling other commitments. The difference (excluding genuine life emergencies) is where we are prioritising our time and what sacrifices we’re willing to make to reach the outcome we want.
Tips for fitting in training when you’re time poor:
✅ Have your treats in a container ready to chuck in your pocket or pouch, and any equipment in an easy to grab, visible spot.
✅ Boiling the jug? Train until it’s done, then reward yourself with that cuppa.
✅ Feeding the dog? Take 10 biscuits and do a few reps before giving them the rest.
✅ Out on a walk? Stop for a couple of minutes and work on a skill. Or skip a walk sometimes and do some training instead - mental stimulation is valuable too.
✅ Playing fetch? Ask for some obedience then use that fetch as a reward.
✅ Watching tv? Put your dog on their place bed.
✅ Set your wake up alarm 10 minutes earlier and work the dog, or fit in a few reps on their final outside toilet at night.
✅ Got the kids with you? Look up a trick tutorial on YouTube and get them involved. Training anything is better than training nothing.
Done is better than perfect, and getting a few minutes here and there adds up. If we really want that outcome, we’ll put the work in to get there.
