How do I stop my dogs from destroying my stuff?

One of the most common issues people contact me for is “how do I stop my dog from destroying my stuff?”

In most cases, there is a pretty straightforward 2-part solution.

Part 1 is making sure the dogs needs are truly being met. This includes providing appropriate exercise, and more importantly, work. It also includes making sure our dogs have access to appropriate outlets for natural behaviours throughout their day such as chew toys or a specific digging area. When we truly meet the dogs needs so many issues disappear or greatly reduce.

Part 2 is ensuring our dogs are set up for success with suitable management in the home. This means that when they’re not being actively supervised then they simply don’t have access to stuff we don’t want them causing chaos with - especially while young. For me, this means a kennel and run, a crate or a puppy pen. Maybe a secure room in the house if well set up. Make sure part 1 is taken care of, then pop them in the kennel while you’re unable to supervise. They’ll be ready for a sleep, your house is protected from damage, they can practice chilling the fuck out instead of rehearsing unwanted behaviours, and you can enjoy a better relationship not constantly arguing with your dog about chewing stuff or stressing about the vet bills and risk of your dog dying from blockages/poisoning. Everyone wins.
